Do You Have Compassion Fatigue?

24 Mar

Ever heard of the term: Compassion Fatigue?

Most people haven’t. You may suffer from it and not even know it.

Take the self-scoring test available at the Compassion Fatigue Awareness Project:  http://www.compassionfatigue.org/pages/selftest.html

Here’s their definition:

When caregivers focus on others without practicing self-care, destructive behaviors can surface. Apathy, isolation, bottled up emotions and substance abuse head a long list of symptoms associated with the secondary traumatic stress disorder now labeled: Compassion Fatigue

While the effects of Compassion Fatigue can cause pain and suffering, learning to recognize and manage its symptoms is the first step toward healing. The Compassion Fatigue Awareness Project© is dedicated to educating caregivers about authentic, sustainable self-care and aiding organizations in their goal of providing healthy, compassionate care to those whom they serve.

While you’re on the website, look around at all the resources available to you.

The Caregiver’s Bill of Rights

23 Mar

As a caregiver, I have the right

to be respected for the work I choose to do.

to take pride in my work and know that I am making a difference.

to receive appreciation and validation for the care I give others.

to set my personal boundaries and have others respect my choices.

to seek assistance from others, if and when it is necessary.

to take time off to re-energize myself.

to socialize, maintain my interests, and sustain a balanced lifestyle.

to my own feelings, including negative emotions such as anger, sadness, and frustration.

to express my thoughts and feelings to appropriate people at appropriate times.

to convey hope to those in my care.

to believe those in my care will prosper in mind, body, and spirit as a result of my caregiving.

This may seem so simplistic. But my journey through life has taught me:

  • It’s nice to be needed.
  • I like taking care of people.
  • I get stressed out.
  • I’m hard on myself.
  • I need to take care of me first.
  • When I’m happy I can help other people better.
  • I need ideas for good self care.
